Alberto Schommer\u2019s connection with photography comes from the cradle. His father, Albrecht Schommer Koch, a doctor by profession, portrayed the life of the city, becoming one of the best photographers of the 1940s and 1950s in Spain. Thanks to\u00a0ABC<\/em>\u2019s series\u00a0Psychological Portraits<\/em>, Schommer earned a professional status that was admired and envied in equal measure.<\/p>

His portraits, far from seeking visual complacency, explored aspects, concepts and paradoxes that invited reflection and debate. His was a very personal style, which he called\u00a0Masks<\/em>: faces in the foreground, with overhead lighting, the look in their eyes shadowed by their eye sockets. His models at that time were bankers, ministers and powerful people.<\/p>

Thanks to the freedom offered by distance, and well aware that his photograph would have made the great painter smile, Schommer used the setting of\u00a0Las Meninas<\/em>\u00a0\u2013the famous painting by Velazquez\u2013 to compose his work\u00a0Levitaci\u00f3n de la Infanta<\/em>. The flowing gowns inspired him to recreate his own scene where the little blonde princess seems to float in the center. Naturally, this work by Schommer has been retouched. With the help of Martin Sampedro, his confidant, the photographer became a technology enthusiast.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Alberto Schommer<\/h2>

Vitoria, 1928 \u2014 San Sebasti\u00e1n, 2015<\/p>

Son of photographer Alberto Schommer Koch, he began his career as a painter and then devoted himself to photography for more than five decades. Renowned for his psychological portraits, he also witnessed the cultural and social transformation of Spain. For Schommer, photography is the way to show the world as it is. In 2014, he became the first photographer to exhibit at the Prado Museum and, in 2013, he won Spain\u2019s National Photography Award.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
