Since 1880, when a photograph appeared for the first time in a newspaper \u2014The Daily Graphic<\/em>\u2014 photography has played an important role to enhance what is told in a text. This is so because, at least in the today\u2019s society, the only thing that matters is what we show, \u201cseeing is believing\u201d as the saying goes.<\/p>

In photojournalism this demand is even greater, simply showing is not enough; it must be done at the right time so that communication is effective. This can only be achieved by a photographer who keeps a watchful eye on what is happening. And Xurxo Lobato was certainly wide awake on the morning of November 19, 2002.<\/p>

At 8:45 am, I\u00f1aki Gabilondo announced the news on\u00a0Cadena SER<\/em>\u00a0radio station: a ship had had a hull breach just off the coast of Galicia. Lobato was editor-in-chief for the newspaper\u00a0La Voz de\u00a0<\/em>Galicia.<\/em>\u00a0The photographer\u2019s good intuition \u2014he was the first to arrive at the airport\u2014 and a stroke of good luck \u2014he took the only small plane available\u2014 came together in his favor and he scored an international exclusive.<\/p>

The photograph of the sinking of the\u00a0Prestige<\/em>, winner of the Ortega y Gasset Award in 2003, was the reward for decades of work by this Galician photojournalist.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Xurxo Lobato<\/h2>

A Coru\u00f1a, 1956<\/p>

This Galician photojournalist has portrayed a wide range of people in different countries over more than two decades, although his name became popular only after winning the Ortega y Gasset Award in 2003 for his photograph of the sinking of the\u00a0Prestige<\/em>, one of those images that remain engraved in the collective memory of a country. His work has been included in numerous exhibitions and his work can be found in numerous private and institutional collections.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
